Well, portable is a fine line.  You can do everything
that Joomla does without using MySQL special
functions.  The problem with doing that is
performance.  MySQL has some special extensions that
can speed up queries significantly from just
"standard" SQL.  So to make it portable (in the true
sense) does have repercussions....
